A Journey Across the Northumberland Strait: The Pictou Island Ferry Experience

Writer's picture: Paula & AJPaula & AJ

When it comes to hidden gems along Canada’s eastern coast, Pictou Island stands out as a secluded paradise in the middle of the Northumberland Strait. The journey to this tranquil destination is an adventure in itself, marked by the iconic Pictou Island Ferry. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned island-goer, the ferry ride offers a unique blend of maritime tradition and scenic beauty.

Please use the online reservation system on the Pictou Island Charters website (www.pictouislandcharters.ca). If your plans change, please let them know through their email system so seats can be made available for others.

Here's what you can expect from your voyage and some essential etiquette tips to ensure a smooth and pleasant trip:

Pack Smart

When packing for the ferry, it’s best to pack your belongings in a plastic tote/bin with a secure lid. Cargo is placed in one collective pile on the deck of the boat, open to the elements. Since all passengers are expected to load the boat together, please avoid packing containers/bags that are too heavy; ensure the average person can easily lift your cargo. Label your belongings with your name and the civic number where you are staying. Masking tape and a sharpie marker work well in this situation. It is best to keep medications, your wallet, glasses and keys on your person.

Boarding the Ferry

The adventure begins in Caribou, Nova Scotia, at the same general location as the Prince Edward Island Ferry. The Pictou Island Ferry dock is located within the fishing boat marina. It can be found by following the signs for the PEI Ferry leading to the Trans-Canada Highway 106. As you approach the end of HWY 106, turn right onto Ferry Road, then take an immediate left onto Fisheman Road. Fisherman Road leads you past the Ferry Terminal Parking lot, turn left after the Ferry Terminal Building, then proceed by travelling along the dock to find the Pictou Island Ferry on your left. The Pictou Island Ferry ties off on a floating dock parallel with the PEI ferry but on the fishing boat marina side of the fence.

When unloading your belongings from your vehicle, please follow the protocols for staging cargo on the dock. Bicycles are usually pre-loaded (and pre-arranged with the ferry operator). Hard coolers and plastic totes are loaded first, so place these items first in line to load on the boat. After all hard coolers and plastic totes are loaded then soft/lighter items and bags are placed on the ferry. After unloading dockside, park your vehicle in the terminal parking lot and make your way back to the ferry dock to get ready to load cargo and board the boat. Passengers load the ferry together, so get ready to pass things along in a human chain, bucket brigade fashion. Remember all cargo is loaded first, then passengers with reservations are signalled to step aboard; if you were unable to secure a reservation, please keep your cargo separate (beside you), until you are secured a seat. You will be greeted by a friendly crew who are always ready to assist with any queries or concerns.

The Voyage

Once the ferry departs, a sense of serenity takes over. The 45-minute journey across the Northumberland Strait offers breathtaking views of the surrounding waters and shorelines. On clear days, the sparkling sea and the gentle breeze provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection. If high winds are expected and you are prone to motion sickness, some gravol or ginger may be in order. Otherwise, looking at the horizon and being in fresh air helps as well.

The ferry accommodates foot passengers only (no vehicles). Seating is provided inside the cabin, as well as on the refreshing open-air deck. There is limited seating capacity on the flying deck up a ladder as well. Please remain seated during the voyage, especially when the captain is docking the vessel.

Arrival at Pictou Island

As the ferry approaches Pictou Island, the picturesque landscape comes into view. Lush greenery, sandy beaches, and the quaint charm of island life await you. The disembarkation process is orderly and efficient, ensuring a smooth transition from sea to land. Please remember to assist with unloading the boat. Unloading the boat is the first order of business, then sorting belongings. The same system used to load in Caribou is used to unload - the human chain to pass items along.

Ferry Etiquette: Navigating with Courtesy

To make the journey enjoyable for everyone, it’s important to follow some basic etiquette guidelines while on the ferry and dock.

1. Timeliness is Key

Arrive at the terminal well ahead of the scheduled departure time. Thirty minutes prior to departure allows ample time for unloading your vehicle, parking, loading the boat and boarding. This should avoid any last-minute rush. Arriving early ensures a spot on the ferry, especially during peak seasons when the ferry can be quite busy. To keep your reservation, you must be dockside ready to board at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Ready to board means your belongings are in the cue to be loaded on the boat, your car is parked in the lot, and you are on the dock beside the boat. Please note, if you are dockside and ready to board yet do not have a spot on the reserved ferry, and the boat is at capacity, then the ferry will come back to take you to your destination.

2. Follow Crew Instructions

The ferry crew is there to ensure your safety and comfort. Pay attention to any announcements or instructions given by the crew, whether it’s about boarding procedures, safety protocols, or disembarkation guidelines. The ferry crew works diligently all season long in various kinds of weather to ensure we have an efficient system in place. At present, there is no passenger charge for the ferry ride, but you are welcome to tip the crew.

3. Mind Your Pets

If you’re travelling with pets, ensure they are well-behaved and under control at all times. Dogs should always be leashed while on the dock and boat. Follow any specific guidelines provided by the ferry service regarding pets, such as keeping them on gentle leads or in carriers.

4. Courtesy to Fellow Passengers

Offer assistance to fellow passengers if needed, especially to those who might be elderly, disabled, or travelling with young children. A small act of kindness can go a long way in enhancing everyone's overall travel experience.

Final Thoughts

The Pictou Island Ferry is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a gateway to a serene and enchanting destination. By embracing the spirit of maritime travel and adhering to simple etiquette, you can ensure that your journey is as enjoyable as the destination itself. So, next time you set sail for Pictou Island, take a moment to savour the experience, respect your fellow travellers, and immerse yourself in the timeless charm of the Northumberland Strait. Safe travels!
